Detailing Waxing Tip #1 : Don't wax a car in the sun. Parking the car in the sun while your are waxing it, or for at least 5 hours after will cause pre-mature evaporation of the solvents. The sun will also heat up the paint, making the application harder.
Detailing Waxing Tip #2 : The swiped test. When applying a wax to a vehicle paint surface and you are not sure how long to leave it before you wipe if off, use your finger and do a small swipe test. If the spot is still greasy, wet, or partially dried, then leave a while and try again later. You want the wax to set ( see product instructions ).
Applying automotive wax to paint has several stages to it. The wax itself goes through a range of stages. The first is is the application of the wax, at this point you are rubbing it onto the surface, both cleaning dust and dirt off at the same time. The wax itself acts as a suspension chemical for the dirt, which is then transferred to the applicator ( this is a good thing ). The second stage is the setting stage. The wax has to set in , allowing the solvents ( carrier chemicals ) to evaporate and leave the resin ( wax ) and fillers behind on the surface. This be anywhere from 1 minute to 60 minutes, depending on the product. This stage will require a few swipe tests ( see above ). The next step is removing the residue after it has dried and set on the surface. Any excess product and carrier residue is removed when wiped off ( buffed off ), using a micro fiber cloth only. After 2 to 3 hours, you can buff a second time, which will bring out a better sheen to it.
Note that the environmental conditions affect how wax is applied and how fast it sets. Humidity plays a large roll and will affect the drying time. Wind and sun affect drying and setting times, use your judgement in applying the wax and you can still wipe on and wipe off soon after it was applied.
Wax can be applied in multiple coats to provide a longer lasting finish, however , the more coats that are applied the less clear it will look. More then 3 coats will start to see deminishing results and duller looking paint.

Use a detailer spray if you're having problems with streaking.
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that you are going to want to do is prepare the surface for polishing. An improperly cleaned paint surface will have dirt, grim and build up that will cause further scratching when you go to polish it.
